How can crowdfunding launch, advance, and sustain writing careers? In this three-hour workshop through Hugo House, writers will learn the differences between crowdfunding platforms, consider what goes into building a strong campaign, discuss the emotional tangle of asking for money, confront the pressure of being accountable to an audience, and explore ways of using one's crowdfunding to bolster literary community. Participants will leave with a clear sense of their own next steps in crowdfunding a creative life.

Katherine Standefer crowdfunded more than $20,000 in research support for her first book Lightning Flowers: My Journey to Uncover the Cost of Saving a Life via Kickstarter and GoFundMe between 2014 and 2016. She has been closely involved in other writers’ crowdfunding campaigns and earns a monthly stipend on Patreon, with more than 45 patrons.

Scholarship applications are open through March 16th; submit your application here.
